Unfortunate Shipping Restrictions

The biggest change to report for the month of July are the latest shipping restrictions, due to local law changes in the areas. We are no longer able to ship kratom to:

• Tenessee
• Kansas
• Utah

*Please note: We can still ship non-kratom products by phone order, including our herbs, herbal teas, handcrafted skincare, and many of the other items you see posted on our TikTok from our sister shop, NV Gifts.

As mentioned in our last blog post, Tennessee and Kansas both voted for a full kratom ban, including sales and possession, being the latest states to criminalize kratom consumers and vendors alike. This is sad news - heartbreaking for so many. We had several customers, and really, friends, from those states that we're no longer able to serve. 

Utah is included here as well, despite them only making extracts and 7OH products illegal. This is because they essentially "shadow banned" kratom. Utah voted to make it so kratom could only be sold in Tobacco Specialty Stores (i.e. smoke shops) and while only vendors could potentially apply to be licensed as one in their state - including companies like ours that don't even live/work in Utah - they made it extremely difficult and expensive. It's $2,500 a year to apply for the license, and then you must register each product for an undisclosed amount of money, with a full certificate of analysis and other demands such as specified label requirements. This can get tricky and expensive, raising the costs to our customers significantly. We had a few customers in Utah that we had become friends with over the years - one of which had been with us since day one - and this was such a difficult decision. I spoke with them on the phone myself, helped them find local alternatives, and I'm not too big to admit that we had a teary goodbye. I hated every minute of it knowing I wouldn't get to hear a friendly voice again.

Something that many lawmakers simply do not get - is that we are a true community.

We care about each other, and losing kratom isn't just about losing access to a product for the millions of responsible adult consumers. It's losing friends, resources, jobs, opportunities, networks, livelihoods, and most of all, losing our freedom to choose a plant for ourselves without government overreach. Many of us have already struggled with excessive government interference in other areas of our lives, this shouldn't be another good thing, another place where we have to fight to have what we want.  

Taunton Bay Tea Co. owners and employees will continue to fight for the kratom community's freedoms in the upcoming legislation season, as we have since 2014 when I helped another vendor stop a state bill in Michigan. We always have worked together to keep our community together, and we always will!
